At the heart of "Holding Light" lies the intention to create a living area that goes beyond mere functionality; it is a space where family members can connect and share emotions. Yu Wen Chiu achieves this by integrating public spaces with varying uses and illuminating every corner with natural light through multiple floor-to-ceiling windows. The design's strength lies in its simplicity, avoiding over-complication through the use of warm wood veneer, matte spray paint, and soft cotton gauze curtains, which together foster a serene and comfortable atmosphere.
The uniqueness of "Holding Light" is evident in its approach to material selection and spatial arrangement. The use of eco-friendly materials such as latex paint made from plant-based ingredients and soft gauze curtains emphasizes the commitment to the health and well-being of the occupants. The herringbone pattern of the solid wood flooring and the thoughtful color scheme based on material textures contribute to the visual appeal and distinctiveness of the design.
Yu Wen Chiu's expertise is also apparent in the technical specifications of the project. The 320-square-meter old apartment was transformed into a modern haven with six bedrooms, a living room, and a dining room. The social area, a hub for interaction, is strategically placed at the center, with private spaces like the children's room and master bedroom situated at opposite ends to facilitate radial circulation. The removal of walls in the social area and the installation of large glass panels and floor-to-ceiling windows serve to unify the space while maintaining the independence of each area.
The design's interaction with its occupants is characterized by its understated elegance. The selection of materials and the removal of unnecessary elements result in a calm and comfortable living image that reflects the owner's preference for a low-key yet refined style. The design's functionality is enhanced by modern technology, including water circulation systems and smart home appliances, which contribute to a friendly and sustainable living environment.
Located in Taipei, Taiwan, the "Holding Light" project commenced in August 2021 and reached completion in December 2022. The design process involved careful research and consideration of material selection, privacy, and space utilization. The challenges of using eco-friendly materials and incorporating high-standard equipment were overcome, resulting in a design that not only meets aesthetic standards but also prioritizes environmental responsibility and resource conservation.
Yu Wen Chiu's "Holding Light" is a testament to the power of design in enhancing the quality of life. The project has been recognized with a Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024, a prestigious accolade that celebrates the fusion of art, science, design, and technology. This design stands as a beacon of modern living, where every detail, from the double doors that offer a sense of ceremony to the soft touch of the leather panels, is crafted to support the emotional and physical well-being of its inhabitants.
